We were approached by a contact within one of the largest energy investors in the Middle East, to aid in their search for an Investment Director. They were looking for someone with strong project finance and origination skills, as well as a good working knowledge of the Middle East region. The role required a broad working knowledge of renewable and hydrocarbon energy investment.

This was a high-impact energy executive recruitment project – but the main challenge was location. Simply put, it can be hard to encourage people to move to parts of the GCC.

Moreover, finding candidates with the required knowledge of local markets and their cultural and regulatory context is particularly difficult in renewable energy executive search.

To overcome this, we focused not only on skillset, but on international mobility and intent. We tested early for relocation appetite, discussing family buy-in, prior moves, and realistic timelines.

Then, the Covid-19 pandemic unexpectedly made the market more flexible – remote and hybrid roles became more viable. That enabled us to broaden the shortlist to include international talent based further afield.

We delivered a curated shortlist of high-calibre international candidates with deep experience in energy recruitment, project finance and stakeholder management across renewables and conventional markets – from which the client made a successful appointment.
